The Lakin State Hospital/West Virginia Industrial Home for Colored Boys was built in 1924 in Lakin, WV. The inmates at Lakin worked at the Lakin State Farm which surrounded the buildings. The hospital was closed in 1956. The third floor still holds a large trough like structure with stirrups, arm restraints and a neck rest. Supposedly doctors at the hospital performed lobotomies, electric shock treatments and abortions on patients. There is also a story about a nurse who was shoved from behind and fell to her death on the basement stairs. It's no surprise that the Lakin Industrial School for Colored Boys has a heavy atmosphere. Immediately upon entering, I felt nauseous. There is a very heavy and oppressive feeling to the building. While walking in the building, there is always a feeling of being watched or followed. Just prior to leaving, there was a loud noise that sounded like gun shot followed by a bullet ricocheting off the brick building. Needless to say we left immediately afterwards.
