Equipment
There are some basic pieces of equipment that every paranormal investigator should have. The following items make up a basic ghost hunter's kit:
1: Camera- most commonly used camera is a 35 mm with 400 speed film or higher. Digital cameras are also widely used, though there is some dispute as to the ability to validate the evidence without a negative. I recommend the 35mm and, if possible, using a digital camera in tandem with a 35mm. Other cameras can also be used. There has been some success using 110 camera and also Polaroid. I personally use a Fuji Film 35mm automatic camera and an Olympus D-510 Zoom Digital camera.
2: Flashlight- this doesn't need much explanation. I recommend looking for a camera that has a red lens. This enables you to use it without destroying your ability to see at night. I prefer Maglight as they come with lens covers and can fit in your camera case or pocket.
3: Notebook- You should use a notebook to keep track of weather conditions, solar weather, date, and time. In addition, you should keep a record of any unusual experiences.
4: Recorder- Recorders are used in order to capture electronic voice phenomena (EVP). There are two type of recorders, analog, which uses a cassette, and digital, which does not use a cassette. When using a recorder, make sure that it has an external microphone in order to cut down on recording noise from internal mechanisms. I use a Panasonic RR-DR60 digital recorder.
The following items can be added to your kit to enhance the amount of information collected:
1: EMF Detector- There are many types ranging in price, including a kit explaining how to make your own. These devices measure electromagnetic field fluctuations. I use the Gauss Master EMF detector as it is inexpensive
2: Camcorder- Video recorders can be used to document an investigation. In addition, it can also video tape moving orbs and anomalies. Camcorders equipped with night vision are recommended. I use a Sony Handycam CCD-TRV37.
3: Infra Red Light- This is in addition to the camcorder. This attachment adds extra night vision to about 60 meters. I use a Sony HVL-IRC.
4: Thermal Scanner- This device measures ambient air temperature and can indicate a decrease or increase in air temperature. Perfect for detecting cold spots.
5: Night Vision- Used in the same way a camcorder with infra red light is used. Orbs can be seen with night vision goggles.
6: Motion Detector- This device uses infra red to detect temperature changes and also uses detector to measure shock waves and physical movement within a certain range.
7: Ion Meter- can measure positive and negative ion energy. When spirit energy is near, the meter measures high disturbance.
8: Geiger Counter- Has been used in ghost investigations successfully since the 1970's

The following are a couple of other devices people sometimes use in their investigations, though their use is somewhat controversial:
1: Diving Rods- Reportedly pick up on spirit energy. They can also be used to "speak" to the spirits. I have seen them used at the West Virginia State Penitentiary and found them interesting, however, they do not provide any actual hard evidence. (I still think they're cool to have) L shaped Rods seem to work best, and the ones that are equipped with plastic covers on the end are best. This prevents the user from faking a response.
2: Pendulums- Used to find spirit energy. I'm a bit skeptical about this one as you determine where energy is by the sway of the pendulum (very easy to fake)
