Crampton's Gap
Brief History: Crampton's Gap is located in Gathland State Park in Maryland. The Appalachian Trail traverses the park and crosses in front of the War Correspondent's Memorial. The battle at Crampton's Gap took place on September 14, 1862 and was he southern most gap fought over during the battle of South Mountain. It was the first major Civil War battle to be fought in Maryland. It is considered tactical win by the Union Army as they were able to break through the Confederate line.
