History: Abingdon Church was designed by Christopher Wren and built in 1755 in the form of a Greek Cross.  The church replaced a former building on that site which dated from the mid seventeenth century.  The church's surrounding cemetery is home of several graves dated 1693, and also houses the tombs from Rosewell plantation which were relocated.  The church is reported to be haunted by a white figure which was first seen in 1863 by a Union soldier.  The young cavalry soldier was separated from his unit and came upon the church.  He went inside to hide from Confederate troops, but when he entered the church, he saw a ghostly white figure descending the stairs from the North Gallery.  The young man left the church and fled on his horse.

We were not able to enter the church as we stopped here only briefly.  However, the history and architecture alone make this an interesting place to visit.  Look for more on Abingdon Church in the future.
